During the recess week, apart from just diligently hitting the books, students from SMU’s Smart City Management and Technology (SMT) Major had the exciting opportunity to visit Huawei OpenLab, Singapore. The educational field trip provided us with a clearer understanding of smart city applications in the real world and the types of technologies available in the industry.

The tour started off with an opening address about the various functions of the lab such as how it serves as a platform to develop solutioning ecosystem and provide innovative ICT (Information and communications technology) solutions for its customers across the Southern Pacific region.

Shortly after, we were introduced to the OpenLab’s command centre where we get to see first-hand how Artificial Intelligence (A.I) was deployed in monitoring and surveillance activities. The command centre powered by “Track-and-Trace” technology is programmed to trigger a predetermined response, and has the ability to instantly detect an object such as locating a person of interest within a large crowd.

In the context of a smart city, cameras combined with video analytics capability, provides the necessary supporting functions for facial, car plate and behavior recognition. It is widely used to identify car models for image processing, making meaningful process with patterns and data.

After the eye-opening experience at the command centre, we had a guided tour around the labs, in which one of the staff from Huawei demonstrated to us an image-processing technology to determine a person’s age and gender. An explanation was also provided to detail how image data is implemented into an application system that enables the tracking of a person’s movements. For example, tracking a person that has been blacklisted. We also took a peek at how Huawei’s technology is being implemented in various hardware for a wide range of applications such as fire detection.

“The field trip to Huawei OpenLab was fulfilling and insightful. It enabled me to gain a better understanding of the technologies that are currently used to build a smart nation as well as the relevant technical skills needed for the industry. The whole experiential learning trip definitely gave me a clearer perspective of the type of jobs I might venture into in the near future.”
