SMU Master of IT in Business Team emerged as Grand Champions in the GLO-BUS Best Strategy Invitational

In May 2021, a team of four SMU Master of IT in Business (MITB) students emerged as Grand Champions in the GLO-BUS Best Strategy Invitational as Team ChampionsAtHeart. GLO-BUS is an online business strategy simulation adopted by more than 31,000 students across 261 universities in 29 countries. Teams were competing for superior global market leadership, superior financial performance, and sustainable competitive advantage.

The SMU MITB Day 2021: Embracing Digital Transformation – Moving from Physical to Digital World Virtual Conference held on 25 March 2021 brought together leading government and industry experts who shed light on current trends surrounding digital transformation in today’s business world.

Congratulations to SMU MITB Analytics students Goh Bee Keow and Salkar Binit Ameya for coming in #1 in the IEOM-FlexSim Student Simulation Competition

The IEOM-FlexSim Student Simulation Competition is an international simulation competition hosted by the Industrial Engineering and Operations Management Society and FlexSim Software Products, Inc. to provide students with an opportunity to demonstrate their problem-solving, presentation, and discrete-event simulation modelling and analysis skills. The top 4 teams shortlisted from the first round were provided an opportunity to present their results in the IEOM Annual Conference held in Singapore virtually on March 9-11 ,2021. Due to Covid situation, the competition was conducted virtually via zoom.

It is felt by enterprises that use analytics tools to obtain actionable insights and improve their business processes. And it is felt by countries like Singapore as they seek to build intelligent transportation systems and other characteristics of a smart city.

The first round of Machine Learning Developers Summit (MLDS) 2020 concluded on 23rd January 2020 in Bengaluru, India, featuring more than 50 engaging sessions, keynotes, and workshops from some of the leading minds in the field of machine learning and artificial intelligence. The conference brought together India’s leading machine learning innovators and practitioners to share their ideas and experience about machine learning tools, the advanced development in this sphere and gave the attendees a first look at new trends & developer products.

On 2nd October 2019, the SMU Master of IT in Business (MITB) programme celebrated 12 years of continued success in education at its inaugural SMU MITB Day 2019 Conference. The MITB programme was started in 2007 with a specialisation track in Financial Services Technology & Operations. Today, the MITB programme offers three specialisation tracks: Analytics, Artificial Intelligence, and Financial Technology & Analytics.

SMU's School of Computing and Information Systems has confirmed itself as home to Asia’s best and one of the world’s best Masters in Business Analytics programmes according to the QS Masters in Business Analytics Rankings 2020. The School’s Master of IT in Business (MITB) programme was ranked 1st in Asia for the second year in a row and 14th worldwide out of 83 Masters in Business Analytics programmes from 18 countries around the globe.

World Cup - Using statistical models to determine the outcome of the World Cup

On the topic of using statistical models to determine the outcome of the World Cup, SMU Associate Professor of Information Systems Paul Griffin asserted that using past team performance data may not be the best way to predict the results. Associate Prof Griffin noted that the four-year lapse between tournaments is ample time for individual players to improve their skills. As such, artificial intelligence models developed around large quantities of data taken from an individual player’s past performance is a surer indicator of future results.

Using data analytics for accurate decision making

In a commentary, SMU Associate Professor of Information Systems Michelle Cheong shared that businesses, especially SMEs, should not feel that data analytics is not for them. By starting with descriptive analytics, performing statistical analytics and building charts, many fundamental and yet critical business questions can be answered. Data analytics is not so much about uncovering the most ground-breaking insights. It is about the positive impact that it can create for the business.

A wake-up call for Singapore’s blockchain companies

SMU Director of Masters of IT in Business programme and Associate Professor of Information Systems Paul Griffin, warned that the recent announcements made by the government are “not a tightening but rather a wake-up call to token providers and exchanges that may not be taking the current regulations on digital tokens offerings seriously enough.” He added that the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) is sending a message to token providers to ensure Singapore remains a safe place to do any form of business. Associate Prof Griffin also noted that MAS is stepping up its efforts to clarify policies because the longevity, volumes, and future potential of tokenization have served as an “impetus” for it to “understand, scrutinize and decide how best to regulate the digital token market.”
